Taking into account the convenient geo-economic location of Turkmenistan, according to the “General Plan for the Development of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport and the Turkmen Maritime Merchant Fleet until 2020” on the basis of the Decree of Esteemed President signed on May 29, 2014, the construction of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport was launched as one of the main sites of the Great Silk Ways
Within the framework of construction, the works performed consist of 8 parts with a total area of 156 hectares: General infrastructure works of the port; Ship building and repairing yard; Cargo and passenger terminal; Container terminal; General cargo terminal; bulk cargo terminal; Repair of terminal for train-carrying ferries; Expansion of the polypropylene terminal. 76% of the project (1.2 million sq. m2) in order not to damage the existing ecological zone was formed by filling the sea with sand.
The project of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport was implemented taking into account the international criteria of the “Green Port”. The international criterion “Green Port” aims to protect the environment of the sea and the sea coast, the effective use of marine nature, the protection of biodiversity. In order to preserve the ecology of the Caspian Sea, on each of the terminals installed bio-purification plants.
