Turkmenistan-Iran: Mary–Mashhad Power Line, Gas Supply Discussed

The 18th session of the Turkmen-Iranian Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation was held in Tehran on May 19–20, focusing on the construction of the Turkmen section of the Mary–Mashhad power transmission line, electricity exports from Turkmenistan to Iran, and the supply and transit of Turkmen natural gas via Iran to third countries under the SWAP scheme.

According to official Turkmen media, Turkmen Deputy Cabinet of Ministers and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov reported on the outcomes of the meeting during an online government meeting on Friday.

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to deepening trade and economic cooperation. In particular, the two sides agreed to develop a working plan for 2026–2028 aimed at boosting mutual trade and increasing trade turnover.

Discussions also included the creation of border trade zones, the organization of joint exhibitions and business forums, and other commercial initiatives. The potential establishment of a Turkmen-Iranian Business Council and the drafting of a corresponding roadmap for bilateral cooperation were also considered.

In addition, the agenda included the rational use and conservation of water resources in border areas.

At the conclusion of the session, a protocol was signed formalizing the agreements reached.
