CIS Council of Heads of State Meeting Held in Avaza

On October 9, 2026, the regular meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was successfully held in the "Avaza" National Tourist Zone, Turkmenistan. Coinciding with the 35th anniversary of the organization's establishment and Turkmenistan's presidency of the CIS, this historic summit marked a significant step toward strengthening regional stability, security, and economic integration. The high-level meeting, held at the invitation of the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov, was attended by the heads of state of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, and the Secretary General of the CIS. The international significance of the event was further elevated by the attendance of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, who joined the summit for the first time as a special guest.

During the meeting, the heads of state discussed more than 15 crucial issues on the regional and international agenda in both narrow and expanded formats. Concrete agreements were reached on deepening trade and economic relations, transitioning to a digital economy, implementing artificial intelligence in production, and removing barriers to trade turnover. The transport and logistics sector was one of the primary focuses of the discussions. Upon Turkmenistan's initiative, 2029 was declared the "Year of Transport Connectivity" within the CIS, with a strong emphasis placed on developing trans-regional corridors along the East-West and North-South routes. Additionally, the leaders planned to elevate multilateral cooperation to new heights in cultural, humanitarian, educational, healthcare, and sports sectors.

Following the summit, a package of key documents aimed at reinforcing friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation across the CIS region was signed. The organization also confirmed the rotation for future presidencies, designating Uzbekistan to chair the CIS in 2027 and Azerbaijan in 2028. The participating heads of state expressed their mutual gratitude to the Turkmen side and specifically to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov for the high-level organization of the meeting and the traditional hospitality shown to the delegations.
