India and Iran held detailed discussions on the conditions for long-term cooperation on the Chabahar port project in the Gulf of Oman, which is being implemented with Indian participation. For India, the port is has strategic importance as it provides access to Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan.
This was announced by the head of the Indian Foreign Ministry Subramanyam Jaishankar following a meeting with the Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran Mehrdad Bazrpash during a visit to Tehran, TASS reports.
“Had a detailed and productive discussion on creating a framework for long-term cooperation regarding the Chabahar port,” Jaishankar wrote on his social media page.
According to him, an exchange of views on the North-South international transport corridor also took place at the meeting.
The port of Chabahar is located in the southeast of Iran. For New Delhi, it has strategic importance because it gives India access to Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan. Also, through this port, India intends to develop relations with the states of Central Asia, Russia and Europe.
