Turkmenistan joined the BUNKER-2001 Convention of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)

In order to comply with international requirements within the framework of bunkering services for ships, relevant work has been introduced to join the «International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage» (BUNKER-2001) and the IMO approved the accession of Turkmenistan to the Convention. This Convention will come into force for Turkmenistan on April 23, 2024.

The BUNKER 2001 Convention was adopted by the International Maritime Organization on March 23, 2001 and entered into force on November 21, 2008. The main purpose of the Convention is to adopt a uniform international standard and procedure for determining liability issues and providing compensation for bunker fuel pollution. According to the convention, bunker fuel is the fuel used to operate ship engines. The Convention ensures adequate, prompt and effective compensation for those injured by fuel spills.

Currently, more than 100 countries of the world are parties to the BUNKER-2001 convention, including the Caspian states of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
