THE INLAND TRANSPORT COMMITTEE OF THE UN ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR EUROPE HIGHLY APPRECIATED THE WORK OF TURKMENISTAN

On February 20, 2024, the Chairman of the “Turkmendenizderyayollary” agency participated in the 86th session of the Inland Transport Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe, which takes place in Geneva. At the session, together with the heads of the relevant departments of the United States, Netherlands, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, the Chairman of the Agency spoke on the topic “National visions and political ambitions for the transition to decarbonization of inland transport by 2050”, presenting the Turkmenbashi International Seaport, which was designed and built based on international criteria "Green Port". Also, representatives of international organizations such as UNFCCC, IRF, and UNCTAD spoke.

The socio-economic strategy of Turkmenistan in 2022–2052 is created to ensure sustainable economic growth, optimization of the public administration system, improvement of living conditions of the people, and here it is necessary to continue diversification of the economy, increase the share of high-tech production in the process of its development, as well as support sectoral digitalization, macroeconomic and financial stability.

In order to carefully preserve the ecology of the Caspian Sea, bio-purification facilities were installed at each of the terminals of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport, and equipment located inside the structure was selected with technologies that operate on electrical energy and do not produce harmful effects on nature. The port applies the principle of minimizing the impact of waste and emissions on the environment.

Reducing and eliminating the negative consequences of greenhouse gas and methane emissions into the atmosphere is an integral part of Turkmenistan’s environmental strategy.

In order to comply with international requirements within the framework of bunkering services for ships, relevant work has been introduced to join the «International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage» (BUNKER-2001) and the IMO approved the accession of Turkmenistan to the Convention. This Convention will come into force for Turkmenistan on April 23, 2024.

The speakers spoke about the practice and work being done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in domestic transport, and also shared that 72% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the transport sector.

It is worth noting that our country is actively implementing and using modern environmental, clean and resource-saving technologies, especially in the fields of energy, industry and transport. For example, in 2023, the Turkmenbashi International Seaport was awarded the ISO 14001 “Environmental Management System” certificate, and the international certificate “EcoPorts”.

The event will take place over 3 days until February 23. The Agency's Chairman will also speak at side events on the topics of sustainable transport and digitalization.
