As it is known, every four years February ends on the 29th instead of the 28th. These years are one day longer than others, i.e. 366 days. And that day is today. An astronomical year usually lasts 365.242 days. Scientists decided to add an extra day every four years when they created the calendar to round off the end of the cycle. This is the result of many centuries, not a day or a month. In general, this year there is one extra day. Those born on February 29 should celebrate their birthday louder than most people. Because they cannot invite their friends and relatives to their birthday every year.
Even on February 29, which is repeated every four years, various events took place in history. There are also events that only occur during leap years. The most important of these are the Summer Olympic Games. As you know, the Olympic Games will be held in Paris this year. To date, only two Olympic Games have been held in a 365-day year - 1986 and 2020, the first and the last. The year of the first Olympic Games, known as the “1896 Summer Olympics” or “Athens 1896”, according to the current calendar should consist of 366 days. But during this Olympics the Julian calendar was used. At the beginning of the last century, with the transition to the Gregorian calendar in almost all parts of the world, countries using the Julian and other national calendars, a certain pattern emerged in the world, and the date we use today began to change. Thus, the Olympic Games, held every four years, also coincided with leap years. The 2020 Olympics were postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic.
Coming back to February 29th, there is also a newspaper in the world that only comes out today. The first issue of the French magazine “La Bougie du Sapeur”, published every four years, was published in 1980. The newspaper's circulation is about 200,000 copies. Beginning in 2004, a special episode was also released on the weekend of February 29th. This happens once every 28 years. The next special issue of this publication will be published on February 29, 2032. The publication is also sold outside France: in Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Canada.
