Turkmenistan and Iran discussed the implementation of the çross-border highway project

February 10, 2025 The National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the People's Council of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov held  a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. During the conversation, they discussed the implementation of a highway project from the Iranian border to the city of Gumdag. This is reported by the official website of Business Turkmenistan.

According to official Turkmen media, the parties noted the importance of this transport corridor and agreed to instruct relevant agencies to accelerate its construction.

The development of transport and logistics infrastructure remains an important area of partnership between the two countries. Given the strategic location of Turkmenistan and Iran, the new road will strengthen ties between Asia and Europe, as well as create additional opportunities for transit between the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf.

In addition, the parties discussed water resources, Caspian cooperation and the upcoming third Caspian Economic Forum, which will be held on February 17-18, 2025 in Tehran. Turkmenistan confirmed its participation at a high level, stressing the importance of dialogue on economic, environmental and humanitarian issues in the region.

On November 18, 2023, in Ashgabat, the State Agency for the Management of Automobile Road Construction of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on the construction of the Gumdag-Etrak-Iranian border highway.
