By updating the infrastructure until 2026, the Makhachkala sea trade port plans to increase the growth rate of cargo turnover by 10%.
The Minister of Transport and Road Facilities of Dagestan Dzhambulat Salavov reported this to TASS.
“In 2024-2026, it is planned to focus on updating the infrastructure - the access road, the railway connection to the port sorting yard, the construction of a grain terminal, which will subsequently lead to an increase in the growth rate of cargo turnover by approximately 10% compared to 2023,” he said.
As previously reported by interim director general of the port Rustam Kerimov, at the end of 2023, the port’s cargo turnover increased by 5.9%, to 2.939 million tons.
According to him, the most significant share in the total volume was dry and general cargo. Their transshipment amounted to 855.3 thousand tons, 1.7 times more than in 2022. In 2023, 317 thousand tons of grain were shipped through the port in Makhachkala (+39.8%).
Also the Russian government has postponed the privatization of Makhachkala Sea trade port JSC to 2024-2026. After privatization, the Dagestan authorities intend to begin large-scale reconstruction of the port.
Makhachkala sea trade port is the only ice-free and deep-water port of Russia in the Caspian Sea. It is an important strategic link in the transport system of the South of Russia with the states of Central Asia, Iran, Transcaucasia, and other countries in the region. Navigation in the Makhachkala port is carried out year-round; the seaport has a permanent multilateral cargo checkpoint across the state border of the Russian Federation. The facility accepts vessels up to 150 meters in length and with drafts of up to 4.5 meters.
