Considering the convenient geo-economic location of Turkmenistan, according to the “Main program of improving Turkmenbashi International Sea Port and Turkmen Merchant Fleet by 2020”, the President’s Resolution on 29 may 2014, the construction of Turkmenbashi International Sea Port envisaged as one of the main sections of the Great Silk Ways.
The construction works consist of 8 parts on a total area of 156 ha. That is, general port infrastructure works, a shipbuilding and repairing yard, a passenger and freight terminal, a container terminal, a general cargo terminal, a bulk cargo terminal, modernization of the railway ferry terminal and expansion of the polypropylene terminal. In order not to damage the existing natural area, 76% of the project (1.2 million m2) is formed by sand-filling the sea.
The Turkmenbashi International Sea Port Project is implemented in compliance with international Green Port standards. The international Green Port scale aims to protect the marine and coastal environment, the efficient use of marine nature and the protection of biodiversity. In order to preserve the ecology of the Caspian Sea, bio-treatment equipment has been installed at each of the terminals.
